The Tornado

The Tornado

I spent the afternoon in the flower garden.  Everything is growing and looking beautiful.  I  am always hopeful they will stay that way throughout the summer, but the weatherman is reporting bad storms and possible tornadoes next week. I have never experienced being in the…

Mother’s Treasure Chest

Mother’s Treasure Chest

I spent the week preparing a lesson to teach for our children’s program at church.  We have only three more weeks.  The students have spent the year studying the treasures of the Bible.  Our final lessons are on Jesus the ultimate treasure. My attention turned…

Summer Vacation

Summer Vacation

This picture was painted by my son.  He is too busy to do much painting, but when he does stop long enough to do one it is always amazing.  This one is huge.  He has tall ceilings in his house so it works well there.

It brings back memories of our summer vacations in Yellowstone.  So many beautiful features can be found there.  One summer when the boys were very young we set out for Yellowstone National Park.  The boys were about 4 and 5 years old.  We drove into Yellowstone Campground and were assigned our campsite.  As we drove through the camp there were signs warning everyone to beware of buffalo on the loose. They said not to feed them and that the buffalo could gore you.

I was beginning to question whether we had made a good choice staying there.  As we approched our campsite we could see that in the campsite right beside us a huge buffalo lay right in the center of the spot.   We inquired as to what to do.  They said just wait a couple of hours and the buffalo would get up and head to the river for water.  We decided to spend the two hours touring the park.  When we returned the buffalo was gone.  I didn’t relax or sleep much camping there.  I was always checking to see if there were any buffalo near our tent.

Trees

Trees

This painting is one of my early paintings.  It is one of those pictures you can see faces and things in it.  They were not placed there on purpose. The impressionistic style and use of color and texture create the unexpected shapes.   It is…

Making Clover Chains

Making Clover Chains

There are always those favorite pictures in your treasure box of old photos.  This is one of my favorites.  I love painting old pictures, studying the small details and reminiscing those precious days. I would doubt a generation of children has passed that didn’t lay…

Summer’s Gifts

Summer’s Gifts

I have been quite busy cleaning out my flower garden.  It is looking pretty good.  I have planted a large number of herbs to add fullness and greenry to the garden.  Hopefully I can use them for cooking and canning as well.  My sister brought me some chocolate mint this week.  I am excited to try a cup of chocolate mint tea.

I have also planted some flowers.  Some of my favorites are those that come up each year without any planting or much care.  The echinacea is one of those flowers.  They come up each year no matter the weather.  Their big brown centers glow with deep reds and oranges in the sun
I am likely to find a finch perched atop one or a humming bird or bees buzzing around them.  When I was a child they grew thick along the roadside.  Every year you would see people stopping and digging some up.  It was thought they were gathering them for medicinal purposes.

Mother never had much of a flower garden.  The coon hounds would lay and dig in them.  She soon gave up trying to keep a pretty flower garden.  Her mother had the same problem as grandpa had fox hounds.  When I work in my garden I am always reminded how much they wanted a pretty flower garden.  I have come to think of it as our (grandma’s, mother’s and mine) garden, knowing they would have enjoyed it as much as I do.
